In July 2014, six medical students from the University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine�s Global Health Concentration (GHC) travelled to Mwanza, Tanzania (map) to do a month-long medical elective. Through this elective, the GHC students were aiming to learn about tropical medicine and infectious diseases, and aiming to gain an understanding of how they may be able to make sustainable contributions to Global Health as future physicians.
In the first part of this two-part interview, the students from the GHC give us an overview of the Tanzanian healthcare system, and the challenges of practicing medicine within a limited-resource setting. This story is told through interviews with local physicians and medical students, and through personal reflections on the students� experience.
The GHC students� experiences working in a limited-resource sharing prompted them to wonder about physicians contributing financially to patient care. So, in the second part of this series the students use interviews with local physicians and medical students to investigate the issue of financial contributions from physicians to patient care: is this something that local or international physicians do? What conditions compel physicians to contribute financially? What are the ethical considerations of such contributions?
