Malnutrition and undernourishment are prevalent causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. According to The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, there were 925 million undernourished people in 2010 and another billion people lacking sufficient vitamins and minerals in their diet. Malnutrition is the main cause of death of one out of every three children.
Given the substantial burden that it imposes upon the world�s health, malnourishment and food insecurity have been key targets of major global health initiatives in past decades. However, as the number of malnourished has increased by 80 million since 1990, food aid initiatives have struggled to blunt the trend of continued food insecurity in the world. In this interview, Gabriel interviewed Mohammed Ashour, MD/MBA candidate at McGill University and CEO of Aspire Food Group, a social enterprise focused on addressing the problem of global food insecurity via the development and distribution of affordable and sustainable insect farming technologies. The idea behind Aspire Food Group earned it the $1 million Hult Prize in 2013, presented by former US President Bill Clinton. In this episode, our guest discusses his company, its mission and its operations in Mexico, Ghana and the United States, as well as the role that business and social enterprises can play in alleviating the problem of global food insecurity.
