The current Ebola outbreak has affected Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Liberia. It has taken the life of more than 3,000 people in West Africa and is raising international concern. On September 25, Friends of Mdecins Sans Frontires at McGill hosted an event titled Ebola 2014: Curbing the Epidemic to raise awareness and address misconceptions about the infectious disease. The event had a turnout of more than 150 students, and we briefly discussed about the event with several short interviews with the two speakers in this episode.
  • Jean-Baptiste Lacombe, who worked as a MSF logistician in Guckdou, Guinea on a one-month emergency mission; who provides an insider perspective to the situation on the ground.
  • Dr. Cedric Yansouni, an associate professor at the McGill Faculty of Medicine and a researcher for the J.D. MacLean Centre for Tropical Disease, provides the Canadian context.
On top of providing the a more in-depth overview about the Ebola virus spread, the Jean-Baptiste, and Dr.Yansouni also gave great insights as a professional in the field, and medical supporter at a international level respectively. In this episode, we highlighted the need of approaching the combat against the Ebola virus rationally, and more importantly, seeing it as a social issue rather than simply a medical one. This way, instead of creating hysteria, we would be more effectively creating solutions to help with this epidemic.
We need to find new ways to communicate about the disease [...] and to improve our understanding about it."      - Jean-Baptiste Lacombe

FACT: The Ebola virus is transmitted through bodily fluids and not air borne.

Errata: Sincerest apologies for repeatedly referring to Jean-Baptiste as Jean-Francois. The producers regret the error.
