The Dhauladhar Range of the Himalayas as seen from Chambi Grounds, Himachal Pradesh. Jagori Rural works in more than 80 villages across this state. |
This week's Health on Earth show features Jagori Rural, a feminist NGO working in more than 80 villages across the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. Himachal's female population suffers disproportionately from iron deficiency anemia - government data says that 70% of women and girls living in the state are anemic. Asha, the Health Program Coordinator at Jagori, joins us to discuss her team's unique approach to reducing anemia. Rather than focus on individual habits and nutrition, Jagori facilitates workshops about how gender and sexism impact health, self esteem and body image. We discuss the challenges the program faces and how its framework is relevant to how healthcare is conceptualized both in Canada and abroad.
