On this week's show we hear about the Bhutan Epilepsy Project. Erica McKenzie, who is currently studying at Queen's University Medical School, spoke about her experience working in Bhutan with the Global Neurology Research Group based at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Supported by Grand Challenges Canada and the Thrasher Foundation, the study tests the feasibility of using a portable, smartphone-based EEG system for diagnosing epilepsy in resource-limited settings. Bhutan is a land-locked country between India and China, with most people living in rural areas with very little or no access to epilepsy specialists. Tune in to hear Erica talk about challenges in diagnosing and treating epilepsy in rural Bhutan, barriers people face in seeking care and why this new technology is so exciting.
