"Currently, almost 3 million children die in their first month of life:
- 10 babies die per minute
- Newborns account for 44% of the 6.6 million under-fives who die every year, and the proportion has been growing as under-five deaths have come down
- The day of birth is the most dangerous - roughly half of newborn deaths occur in the first 24 hours. - Most of these deaths occur among the poor." (UNICEF, 2014)

UNICEF, with other organizations, have made great strides to improve children's lives. This week, we invited 2 senior advisors for UNICEF, Dr. Kim Eva Dickson, senior advisor on maternal and new born health, and Dr. Chewe Luo, senior advisor on HIV and AIDS, to share with us what the work of UNICEF mean to children now and in the post-2015 development agenda. Dr. Dickson and Dr. Luo are not only passionate about global health issues, they also know how maternal and child heath is faring on the ground through programs in over 150 countries. They pin-pointed, through data from UNICEF, where the bottleneck are.
Dr. Dickson introduced how the Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP) provides a clear roadmap ending preventable newborn deaths. Dr. Luo, on the other hand, presented UNICEF's strategy in eliminating mother-to-child transmission to HIV and highlighted her take-away from the recent Partners' Forum on Maternal, Neonatal, and Child Health - where equity is a core value to UNICEF's work.
