Happy Canada Day folks! To bring Health On Earth back to Canada today, Lorraine spoke with Ryan Meilli of Upstream and Kevin Millsip of Next Up about their work with young Canadians. Ryan is a Family Doctor at the Westside Community Clinic in Saskatoon, an Assistant Professor at the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, as well as Founding Director of Upstream. Upstream seeks to reframe public discourse around addressing social determinants of health and social illness such as domestic voilence, substance abuse, poverty, and inequality. Together with a group of young professionals, Upstream shares stories and engages citizens to create conditions for wiser decisions.
We also interviewed Kevin Millsip, co-founder and director of Next Up. Next up offers leadership programs for young adults committed to social and environmental justice. While Kevin is based in BC, the organization has programs across Canada and that their training and leadership work are extremely relevant to the reframing work undertaken by Upstream. The two organizations share many similarities. In fact, applications for the 7-month 2014/15 programs in BC, Saskatchewan, Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa will open in July 2014. Check them out!
