A lot of efforts have been put in place to improve health outcomes in developing countries. However, what works? And what does not? Among all sorts of methods, what is the most effective solution to challenges of health care services delivery? This week, Lorraine interviewed Ms Vandana Sharma and Ms Angela Ambroz, who are health program specialists at the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), to learn how they evaluate impact of social programs such as HIV/AIDS prevention, maternal health, and immunization.
Currently, J-PAL has 96 health projects in 30 countries. Ms Angela Ambroz explained to us how the organization conduct social experiments given a broad range of geographic characteristics. Based on quantitative and qualitative evidences, J-PAL works closely with local authorities and communities to propose the most cost effective and country-specific interventions. Ms Vandana Sharma then shared some successful stories and challenges through her experiences conducting public health research in Kenya and Nigeria. As medical doctors and economists, Vandana and Angela find their work in the international arena extremely rewarding.
