This week Rafiya spoke with Professor Tom Fronds, professor of Aerospace Medicine at the Baylor Institute of Aerospace Medicine, Houston. Dr. Tom Fronds' research focuses on the long term cognitive effects of zero gravity on the brain. His research group studies a phenomena called microemolization, that occurs in the brain's small vessels when an astronaut is exposed to zero-gravity. These microemboli can cause small, unnoticeable infarctions in the brain's vasculature over long periods of time. Dr. Fronds discusses the implications of this on the future possibility of long-distance space travel.
