Harmful stigma and misperceptions about mental illness are among the biggest challenges in bringing mental health programs into communities; often resulting in social restrictions, delay in treatment and low self-esteem.
This week, Alice talks about an expert panel on Addressing Mental Health Stigma, hosted at GHD Online in May 2015, exploring the programs that address these challenges and successful mental health educational efforts that have been applied to different settings and diverse populations, such as Haiti and China.
Panelists included Helen Christensen, PhD (Chief Scientist and Director of the Black Dog Institute), Samuel Law, MD, FRCP(C) (Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto) and Rupinder Legha, MD (Psychiatrist/Pagenel Fellow at Zanmi Lasante and Partners in Health; Research Fellow in Global Health and Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School).
