Rehri Goth is an impoverished fishing village in the province of Sindh in southern Pakistan. Here, one out of every seventeen babies dies in the first 28 days of life, and one out of nine dies before reaching age five.
This week, Rafiya spoke with Dr. Anita Zaidi, a pediatric infectious disease specialist who has planned a thorough endeavor to eliminate malnutrition among expectant and new mothers and their babies, ensure that children have access to primary health care and immunizations, and train community health workers and midwives at Aga Khan University. In this episode, Dr. Zaidi describes the isolation of the residents of the village from access to peri-natal care, and how this results in an astronomical rate of child mortality and debilitating illness. She also discusses how integrating community health workers, midwives, and safety/hygiene procedures that can be performed outside of the hospital can drastically reduce the rate of infant death and disease.
