On this week�s episode, Lorraine explored the culturally sensitive and political controversial issues working in developing countries. In implementing long term and sustainable solutions to challenges, international aid/ development workers often require to modify their work as they become accustomed to local culture. Lorraine spoke with three researchers affiliated with Innovation for Poverty Action (IPA), a non-profit organization that also conducts randomized controlled social experiments in order to learn more.
Elana Safran and Aubrey Levine are both research managers of IPA. The two research managers are involved in the early phase of health and micro finance projects in Ghana. They spoke about challenges in the field and how the headquarters and country offices coordinate in overcoming such obstacles. They highlighted the need for health professionals to pay close attention to local culture and social issues when developing health projects, particularly when working with rural communities. Heather Lanthorn shared her former field experience with IPA in Northern Ghana and India. She spoke about the differences between working as public health practitioners versus medical doctors and nurses in developing areas.
